I agree - it's very odd... but what is MORE odd are the circumstances of these two shots... I almost did nothing here, except improving the lighting and the combination...
my son went for a trip in Jordan, Petra and the desert... they travelled in a local van... and the driver put a DVD player instead of a mirror... and he watched some arabic movies during the driving... so, if you'll look again, you could see the head support and my son's profile too...

and I say - man! you're in the desert! can't you enjoy it??????

Yeah, fact is sometimes way stranger than fiction! Yikes on the driving! I guess at least if the driver swerved off the road he wouldn't have hit anyone, but it sounds pretty hairy (which means scary). If I was your son I'd have had to do the journey with closed eyes and clenched knuckles!
